Vegetable Garden Tools
Vegetable garden tools are important in our vegetable garden. Having the right one to do the right job will make our garden experience easier and more enjoyable.
Below is a sample of what we will be talking about.
In the picture below is a battery-operated tiller. I believe this is just right for the small home vegetable garden. The tiller is very efficient in breaking up the soil (this is soil that has already been broken up by a pick) and making it finer. It is good for mixing stuff within the soil. When tilling, do not over-till or this will serve to compact the soil. In the home garden, tilling will probably only need to be done every couple of years.
In the picture below are a few things to spice up your vegetable garden if you want it to look good. A fountain here and there and a bird bath here and there would make the vegetable garden more pleasant to the eyes and create a very relaxing atmosphere. At this time, I am not too concerned about the look of my garden. I just want it to produce vegetables.
In the picture of vegetable garden tools below, there are various picks to be used for breaking the soil for the first time. Of course, if you are building raised beds, you may be bring in soil so a pick would not be necessary. I had to use a pick on my old garden area since the soil had gotten hard while I was in the Middle East working.
In the picture below are some small shovels and rakes. This are useful for transplanting and weeding between the rows of plants. Since this process is delicate, these tools allow you to get on your knees and work around the plants.
In the picture below are various shovels. You may need these in the beginning, but if using raised beds, you should seldom have to use one.
In the picture below is a gas tiller. It will do the same job as a battery-operated one but will pollute the environment more. You will also have to have gas, gas oil, and oil on hand to use it.
In our list of vegetable garden tools we need a pair of gloves to protect our hands. Of course, if you are watching the videos, then you notice I am not using any. At this point, I do not need them for my vegetable garden, but if using a pick or shovel, I will have a pair on.
In the picture below are various water hoses. What you want to do will depend on what type of hose you use to irrigate your garden. I will be trying the soaker hose this year to see how it works.
In the picture below is a soil test kit. For more information see the tab "soil testing."
In the picture below are more tillers as part of our vegetable garden tools.
Below is a video of me using a battery-operated tiller.
