Vegetable Garden Companion Planting

Vegetable garden companion planting is important to know so that we do not mix plants together that do not grow well together.

I will be talking about the plants I am growing. If there is a plant not mentioned that you would like to know about, just email me on the form below.

The first one and my favorite is the tomato. The tomato can be grown with the bush bean, carrot, cucumber, lettuce, pepper and onion.

It generally does not like to be grown by the pole bean. Why? Well, I tried to find out and could not. My guess is because both of these use a lot of nitrogen. In the books and sites I looked at one that says not to do this, while another says nothing about it.

The next one is the bush green bean. Generally it can be grown with beets, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, radish, strawberries and sunflowers. It generally does not like to be planted with onions.

The pole green bean can be grown with the carrot, cauliflower, cucumber and strawberry. It does not like to be grown with beets, onions, radishes or sunflowers.

Now if you have read our green bean page then you know I am going to plant sunflowers and then have my pole beans grow up them. I guess we will see how they do.

Beets can be grown with bush beans, lettuce, radishes and onions. For some reason, I did not get any radish seeds this year. I guess it slipped my mind. They generally do not like to be grown with the pole bean.

Broccoli can be planted with bush beans, carrots, beets, lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes. They do not like pole beans or strawberry plants.

In vegetable garden companion planting it seems like one year I planted pole beans in the center of a three foot row and ran a three row wire trellis for them to grow up. Then I planted strawberry plants in the remaining area. They grew very well. Not sure how well since we ended up moving in the middle of the growing season.

Cauliflower likes beets, bush beans, carrots, tomatoes, onions and carrots. It does not like pole beans or strawberry plants.

Carrots like green beans, peppers, radishes, tomatoes and lettuce.

Cucumbers like bush beans, sunflowers, and tomatoes. I think I will try to grow some cucumbers up the sunflower plants.

Lettuce likes everything.

Onions like beets, carrots, lettuce, peppers, strawberries, tomatoes and turnips. They do not like green beans.

Peppers like carrots, onions and tomatoes.

Squash likes onions and radishes.

Strawberries like beans, lettuce and onions.

Tomatoes like bush beans, carrot, cucumbers, onion and peppers.

Turnips like the onion.

With vegetable garden companion planting this is by no means a complete list. In order to find out what works best, you will need to experiment. Despite searching, I could not find reasons why some grow well together and some do not grow well together.
