How to Grow Lettuce

Nancy Lettuce Adriana Lettuce

How to grow lettuce is the focus of this page. For the Fall garden we will be growing two varieties: Nancy (on the left) and Andriana (on the right). Both of these are a leaf lettuce.

According to our lunar guide, the best time to plant these is from the 5th to the 11th of September.

From our Companion Growing page we know that these can be planted with any of the Fall vegetables we will be growing.

In the pictures below I am planting the Lettuce in containers. I will get three heads in the large container and two heads in the small container.

As these grow we will pluck leaves as we need them. We do not need to harvest the whole head at one time.

First we will plant our seeds in a 1/2 hole. Put two seeds in each hole just to make sure we get one plant.

Next we will cover the seeds with dirt and water them. Do not plant the seeds more than 1/2 inch. Otherwise they could rot before sprouting.

Our seeds should sprout up out of the container in about seven days.

My Nancy lettuce is coming along nicely. I will be able to harvest some in about a week. I will pull the leaves I want and let the rest keep growing.

UPDATE 12-20-09

Below are pictures of the lettuce we grew outdoors. The indoor lettuce did not do well. I believe I did not have enough light on them. I guess I am not good at growing stuff indoors.

The Nancy and Adriana Lettuce came out real good and tasty. My son borrowed my camera and accidentally erased the updated pictures I had not posted yet.

There were a few nights when the temps got below freezing so I moved the plants into the shed. We had a lot of cloudy days and cool temps this Fall. It was enjoyable but it did not help my Fall plants any.
