How to Grow Cabbage

Cabbage Plant

This page will be talking about how to grow cabbage. We will take pictures and post them here as our cabbage progresses through out the season.

We will be planting the Ruby Perfection variety.

According to the Lunar Guide, our cabbage seeds need to be planted between September 5th and the 11th.

According to our Companion Growing page we know that cabbage can be planted with any of the vegetables we are growing this fall.

I planted my seeds according to schedule. However, I did make a mistake. I only planted one see for each plant. These did not come up so I had to replant. This time I planted three to four to make sure something came up.

I did not want to waste seed or spend time thinning but I guess there is no way around having to thin. Even if I had started them in starter pots, I still would have needed to plant more than one.

The video below shows how to plant the cabbage seeds in a raised garden bed. I also used a row cover with this raised bed.

In the picture below is the cabbage seeds emerging. When they are about two inches high, I will have to thin them out.
