Growing Lettuce
Growing lettuce comes in a variety of shapes and textures. I like the iceberg type myself. My wife and daughter like the leave type which is what we will be trying to grow in our vegetable garden this year.
I do not eat much of it because it gives me indigestion. For hours after eating it I will be burping it up.
I planted the seeds the other day and will see how they come out.
This leafy green plant likes conditions from partial shade to full sun. It grows best with a soil pH of 6.0 to 6.8.
It can be started indoors. This year I elected to plant mine straight in the garden. I really did not want to bother with it, but my wife insisted since she likes the leaf type.
These seeds are cold tolerant. They can take the frost. However, the seeds are slow to germinate.
In the video below I am planting lettuce according to an idea I read.
The best way to growing lettuce is to broadcast the seeds. This means shake them out on the area you want to grow the heads in and then cover with a thin layer of dirt.
Later the seedlings will need to be thinned. This can be done by running a rake through them.
When transplanting or thinning, thin to one head every twelve to eighteen inches apart.
If our heads are still growing during the heat of the summer, they will need to be shaded. If not, they may taste bitter.
It is possible to grow these in a container about eighteen inches in circumference. Plant one fourth of the container every two weeks for a good continuous supply.
This way you can move it to cooler parts of the yard during the season. Pick individual leaves for a continuous supply. The idea in growing container lettuce is to plant the seeds around the outside edges of the container.
Lettuce Update: 3-10-09 The video below shows our lettuce growing and making progress. Soon I will need to thin and transplant some of these to another spot.
With them in this container, I can move it to cooler locations as the summer wanes on since these plants do not like the summer heat.
Generally, we would have had these planted a month or so ago, but it has taken me some time to get things set up after being in the Middle East for five years.

The lettuce grew and I took pictures but they were accidentally deleted.
