Hi. About the author is about me, David Schulze. I live in San Antonio, TX. In my life I have served in the military, been a pastor, youth pastor, worked four years in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.

I grew up in a small town in Texas called Leakey. I played football, where I was honored to play on the team that won the State Championship for the last eight man football game played in Texas. There is no substitute for being Number One. This was back in 75' and there is a sign up to this day about the victory on the three roads going into Leakey.

While in high school I ran track. I did the one mile run. Usually they were asking me to clear the track so they could get ready for the next race.

I really did not learn about running until I got into the Army. I learned "No Pain, No Gain. I once ran ten miles in 75 minutes. Now I do good if I can get out of bed in 75 minutes.

I have another website called Iraq Up Close and Personal where I talk my travels overseas. I also list a lot of resources for finding work in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I was very proud of this achievement. I was hired to plan, develop and design the whole operation. Based on my experience from Baqubah, Iraq, I came up with a list of items we needed to stock when we opened.

I had to set the pricing, profit margins and so on. I had to price and stock the items. I designed merchandiser so we could display items that hung up.

I had to design this store out of materials we currently had on hand at our base in Al Asad. I showed the labor crew how to build a pier and beam foundation so we could put what they called collapsible buildings on it.

These buildings were 12' x 40'. We put six of them together to create our store. Since we would not have a forklift, I designed a dock so that a flatbed could pull up right beside it and we could unload it. Without a forklift, we could unload a forty foot flat bed in four hours.

I had 1.5 million dollars in sales in the first eight months. But then all good things come to an end. The company made some bad business decisions in other departments that led to the downfall of the company and the closing of the store.

About the Author UPDATE: 9-15-09: I met a guy who just came from Al Asad. He told me the old store is gone and in its place is a new build which will be ACE Hardware. I has spoken to ACE in Kuwait about opening joining with us. ACE was for it but the current manager of our company was not.

Then I went to Afghanistan to eradicate poppy plants. Basically the United States is trying to use a sheep process to tame a rabid bear. It just is not going to happen. The people there have grown up with a desire to live at war with everyone instead of peace.

I was forced to work in the garden when I was in seventh grade. Each spring and summer brought many hours working in a 200 x 200 foot garden. Most of my time was spent doing weed control. They always managed to stay ahead of me no matter how hard I tried.

When I left home to join the Army, I told myself I would never set foot in a garden again. On my first visit back, my dad asked me to go and work in the garden. I told him about the promise I made to myself.

But then while attending Bible College in Colorado Springs, this strange urge came over me to want to garden again. So I started gardening again. There was/is a lot to learn. For five years while working overseas, I did not get to do any gardening.

My garden and my lawn fell into disarray while I was gone. I have made a lot of progress getting fixed up, even the grass was making a come back until it just got to hot to try to keep watering it. Maybe it will make some come back as the temps get cooler this fall.
